The Power Of Smell

Henry here. Sorry for the long absence. For over twenty years the local government used an area several miles from here to dump some 4 million tones of unseparated garbage. The community rejoiced when the dump closed and the periodic stench stopped wafting over to us from the dump.

With the closure of the dump, scholarships were made available to all the graduating high school students and my son, along with many others, was able to take advantage of their generosity.

Now something has changed. Perhaps what this means is that there is something positive in most events. There is an article in the local paper saying the local municipality has contracted with an energy company to capture and make available the methane gas produced by the dump.

Now it is being announced that over the next 15 years, the company will provide electricity for 2000 homes using the captured methane.

Now if that isn’t a twist of fate nothing is. For 20 years people complained about the nearness of the dump, its effect on property values, its reputation in the area, and the periodic stench when the wind was right.

Now we can brag about being so green doing something creative and new with stuff the community discarded.
