Head In The Sand

Henry today. Driving home a while ago, I heard an interview on the radio with a NASA scientist who said he was “connecting the dots” about global warming. He said that the next ten years are critical. For the past ten years the world has produced 2% more CO2 each year. Over the next ten years it would likely be another increase of 25% or more.
If this increase could be stopped, he said then global warming could be held to one degree; if not we are all in deep trouble. Fossil fuels have to be used much less, etc. The white house has moved to repress his message. As near as I can understand, they say that he is not an expert on oil and its use so he shouldn’t speak out on the subject. He is making statements about policy which they say he shouldn’t. He says all he is doing is using his commons sense to “connect the dots.”
My mind boggles at Bush White House’s reluctance to face what appears to be the gospel truth. Surely the scientist could not lie about the amount of CO2 increase and its danger.
This makes me think of the president of South Africa who said that HIV/AIDS was not a problem. I seem to remember that he even said that it might be something the western nations were fussing about but was our problem not his.
What is the difference between him and the Bush White House on this issue? Those officials do not seem to be able to think that their children might have to suffer greatly because of their inaction. They seem to be quite definitely asleep at the wheel. What can be done to wake them up?
