Whittington Sorry

Henry here. The lawyer who was shot on a hunting trip by vice president Dick Cheney apologized for the trouble that Mr. Cheney had faced over the past week. According to the Globe and Mail he said “the past weekend had involved a cloud of misfortune and sadness that is not easy to explain, especially with those who are not familiar with the great sport of quail hunting”.
This is an interesting comment. I grew up hunting, crows, skunks, ducks, geese, partridge, pheasants and quail. Later there were deer and bear - never got one of those. So I have some familiarity with the “great sport of” hunting. Finally, I grew up enough to not be interested in killing things.
Mr. Whittington’s picture in the Globe article clearly show what look to be 24 holes where pellets struck him on the face and neck. It looks like three, or more barely missed his right eye. It looks like he could easily have been blinded in that eye and yet he apologizes.
Perhaps out in the Wild West, real men are brought up on cowboy stories and hunters shoot each other, but in my end of the woods, the first rule of all hunting is not to shoot your hunting partner. What surprised me is that it seems that part of this unique new approach is for the victim of the shooting to apologize for distressing the shooter.
I wonder if lawyers in Whittington’s company will be plush with government contracts for a long time.
