American Idol Type

Greetings all, Steve here. Well, I’ve just sat through the first American Idol show of the season. My girlfriend Meghan will likely watch much of the season, but I’ll only watch the first few shows, mainly to feel better about myself. My lord, the way some people embarass themselves on that show is just awful. Really terrible. Really, really gut-wrenchingly nasty. And it makes me feel so much better about my life:) I was just feeling kinda down, probably due to the 47,000 consecutive months of rain in Vancouver, but after watching American Idol, I suddenly feel much, much better about myself.

I wonder why people even bother. Besides the potential for people to embarass themselves horribly and besides the fact that many of the ‘winners’ on these Idol shows have very short-lived careers, you have to put up with Simon.

Now, the thing about artists, regardless of how much talent they may or may not have, is that most of them are feeling types, which means to get through to them you have to tell them what’s good about their work and then tell them what they need to work on, otherwise they don’t hear it. If you tell them what’s wrong with their work first, but tell them not to take it personally, they just stop listening.

Simon does exactly the opposite, just for effect and it can be very entertaining to watch. He says stuff like,

“Now, don’t take this personally, but that was so bad that I wanted to rip out my own spleen and throw it at you.”

or

“Don’t take this personally, but I would rather spend 5 years in a Turkish prison than listen to you sing anymore.”

or

“Listening to you sing was the worst thing that has ever happened to me, including the time I was kicked in the stomach by a horse.”

Ah, Simon, a guide for the rest of us:)
