I'd have to ask Dad on this one, but it seems to me there must be a difference between someone thinking they're a lampshade or a rose bush and someone being disconnected from reality;) If old George starts telling people he's an armoured personal carrier or a fax machine, I think we'll be in different territory. I saw Archbishop Desmond Tutu on the Daily Show (yeah, I know) a while back and he really laid it out, really echoed what I had been thinking, but hadn't really put into words. He said basically that the rest of the world likes the American people, who generally are a forthright, likable, decent bunch, but we're terrified of their government. This was our experience as well. My family lived in New York for two years in the early 80s and we remember, even in New York, that most people were very nice, if standoffish due to the big city mentality, but I can distinctly recall being made to duck and cover in grade 1. I didn't understand what we were hiding from, crouching down in the hallway like that, but I remember thinking that this was not going to work:P Hmm, good point.
