Corporations don’t want to help you.

Greetings all. Here are at When Reality Knocks we’re all about cutting through the clutter and helping to see the way things are and as a public service, I have decided to present the first in a series of editorials on how to recognize and protect yourself in our society, which I call: How To Be More Cynical. Judging by the things I hear people say on a daily basis, being cynical is an underdeveloped and underappreciated skill these days.

Today’s topic: Corporations don’t like you and they’re not trying to help you. Corporations are trying to make money.

I heard two people talking about extremely low-alcohol beer the other day. One was trying to convince the other that it was a God-send, that the beer company had made it to accommodate those people who for whatever reason weren’t supposed to drink, i.e. recovering alcoholics.

Ouch. Here are two guys who, clearly, have enough of their own problems already and they’ve been convinced by the system that this product will actually help improve their lifestyles, that it’s been made to make their lives better.

Here’s the thing about low-alcohol beer, as well as all the other something-free products, caffeine-free cola, caffeine-free coffee, caffeine-free sugar-free cola, caffeine-free sugar, etc. None of these are made to help people; they’re made to make money. If you drink a lot of coffee and decide that caffeine’s not good for you and you stop, the coffee companies have lost a good customer and they produce decaffeinated coffee to try to win you back. Ditto for sugar-free candy-bars, low-tar cigarettes, low-toxic steroid milk and low-carb beer, now with fewer calories and the same great taste. These companies know their products are bad for people, and in some cases kill people, and they don’t care.

If you quit eating, drinking and smoking their products they only see a lower figure on the balance sheet, not a human being. If these people thought they could get away with it, they’d try to market, `I Can’t Believe It’s Not Heroine.’ They don’t care about people: Just look at advertising. Any group of people who will try to make a 12-year old boy feel nostalgic about pantyhose with a straight face are not to be trusted.

Stay tuned for more helpful topics on how to be cynical.
